“Which DJ should be booked at my event?”, is the common question I always get asked. My reply is, “Depends on what you’re looking for?” In this blog, I will explain P.L.A.Y and a list of questions to ask the DJ. I also will provide you with a summary of each DJ package and which would best fit your event(s). Keep in mind, that a DJ is another salesperson pitching an experience for your event.
What kind of DJ should I book?
The common question always asked is, “What DJ would be great to be booked for my event?” I know some of my friends go based on recommendations, others go on what they’ve seen through marketing and others contract DJs based on desperation. I’m a firm believer, every DJ has their own niche and some DJs are better than others depending on the event. However, I always suggest the P.L.A.Y. concept.

P.L.A.Y : Price Location Attitude Your Judgement
The P.L.A.Y. concept is the process of booking a DJ for your event. You will contract a DJ who meets your budget while having the necessary qualifications or credentials. In addition, you should look for someone willing to travel to the venue location—an exaggerated example being destination weddings. (It can be a deal breaker.) As the potential client, you will assess how charismatic and personable the DJ is, and, most importantly, their flexibility with last-minute adjustments. Once the information is gathered, you will use your judgment to determine if the DJ is the right fit. Remember, when you’re hiring a DJ, you’re contracting an individual or team who will rock the party without causing any stress for the client.
The Benefits of P.L.A.Y
For the P.L.A.Y. concept to be successful, you must execute it through to the end. The majority of people looking for a DJ worry about one thing: THE PRICE. The client often focuses on negotiating and pricing, but neglects the remaining steps. Failing to follow the method could lead to a poor customer experience. By applying the P.L.A.Y. concept, the client can successfully avoid party mishaps while ensuring their guests have a pleasant time enjoying the tunes. It’s obvious, that everyone wants a good DJ at a good price with all the bells and whistles, but in this business, it’s the same as others, you get what you pay for.
Here’s a list of questions to ask during the first consultation:
- How long have you been DJ’n for?
- Do you work with a team, or do you work by yourself?
- What’s the biggest event you’ve DJ’d, and what kind of event was it?
- How versatile is your library?
- What’s a mishap you’ve had at an event, and how did you overcome it?
- Is your pricing firm, or is it negotiable?
- What’s the furthest you’ve traveled for an event?
- Do you have accessible wi-fi?
- When a guest asks for a song that you don’t have, will you be able to find it and play for them?
By asking open-ended questions, both the client and the DJ can better understand the event. Any DJ booked can handle your event, but as previously mentioned: all DJs have their niches. There are DJs who are event-specific and can cater to large types of events, focusing in playing various genres while maintaining high energy. In the following paragraphs, I will provide a general overview of the most common events (along with picture packages) and DJ recommendations finishing with my professional input.

DJ in Small Event: (Baby Showers, or At-Home Events)
These events’ attendance range from 10-150 people and require very little effort from the DJ. The host should look for a DJ who’s new and looking for exposure. Potentially looking for more experience under their belt. Seek for someone who just started: it will help both parties for the following reasons:
- The price is negotiable.
- The DJ is relatively inexperienced and plans on mastering their craft.
- Their music catalog is small and willing to take play requests.
- The setups are typically smaller.
Backyard parties are usually laid-back, with music serving as a backdrop to the event. A beginner DJ would be a reasonable selection when the host is looking for flexibility and a reasonable price.

DJ in Mid Sized Event (Sweet 15/16s, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Graduations)
These events’ attendance ranges from 150-400 people and will require more effort from the DJ. For these types of events, the host should look for DJs with experience and the ability to adapt to the party. The host should contract a DJ, who has done similar events, with a diversified music library. In these types of events, the host should look for a DJ who works with MCs and can work with other vendors such as photographers/videographers. The benefit for both parties is:
- The DJ booked for the event will fairly be priced.
- The DJ will have an organized playlist for everyone.
- The music transitions will be a lot smoother, avoiding disruptions.
- Will work with a Master of Ceremony to keep the audience engaged.
From my professional experience, most DJs can handle mid-sized events. As long as they’ve been properly trained and can read the crowd well. Bigger events are easier to DJ due to family and friends will take their couples out to dance. These party packages are priced based on demand and may change if the host requests the DJ to be more detailed or interactive.
DJ in Large Event (Weddings/ Corporate Events/Festivals)
Large events with attendees greater than 400 will require the DJ to work with various teams. The DJ must collaborate with the photographers, videographers, and light and sound engineers. At the level of this event, it’s important to note the client will have an ‘a la carte’ style production conducted by a team of professionals. The host should submit a form with all their requests and provide the teams with time to deliver the service. This white glove service has no budget and can be as detailed as the host wants.
Conclusion
Choosing the right DJ for your event is not just about price; it’s about understanding the specific needs of your event and how well a DJ can meet those needs. By applying the P.L.A.Y. concept—Price, Location, Attitude, and Your Judgment—you can navigate through the process with confidence and ensure a seamless booking experience. Whether you’re hosting a small backyard party or a large wedding, asking the right questions and understanding the nuances of each DJ package will help you find the best fit. Remember, a DJ is more than just someone who plays music—they’re an integral part of the event experience, helping set the tone and energy for the entire occasion. By following these steps and considering the unique qualities of each DJ, you’ll be well on your way to creating a memorable event for you and your guests.
